Welcome sequence email copy tips

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know how much I adore email marketing—especially crafting thoughtful welcome sequence emails.

In the video below, I’m excited to share insights from my good friend and genius copywriter Marisa Corcoran, creator of the Copy Confident Society and the wildly popular Copy Chat summit. Marisa knows exactly how to make your emails magnetic, converting landing pages at rates of 60% or higher. She’s also raised over $120,000 for incredible organizations like Soul Fire Farm and Sage USA—talk about impact!

We recently dove deep into welcome sequences, a topic I know many of you stress about. Here are the top insights Marisa shared about crafting emails that truly resonate:

Your first welcome email should do these three simple things:

Marisa highlighted a common struggle: the overwhelm of making that perfect first impression. Many people freeze up, worried about including all the right things. But guess what? It doesn’t have to be complicated. Even starting with just one email puts you miles ahead of most people.

1. Deliver on your promise: Immediately give subscribers the lead magnet or content they signed up for.

2. Keep it simple. Offer just one additional platform where people can connect with you (like Instagram), instead of bombarding them with every platform you’re on.

3. Encourage replies. Give them a fun reason to hit reply (like a quick “Got your email, can’t wait for more!”) to ensure your emails stay out of spam.

Marisa also shares something surprising that works amazingly well: a “fun facts” email. A mix of quirky, personal tidbits (like her deep confusion about idioms—can anyone else never remember if it’s “six of one” or “half dozen of another?”) blended with credibility builders (like growing her list from 90 to 5000 subscribers). This not only shows personality but subtly highlights expertise. Plus, it gets readers to engage by replying with their own fun facts.

We also talked about the incredible power of storytelling. I used to dread writing newsletters—until I started adding personal stories. That’s when readers began truly connecting. Marisa uses storytelling beautifully, including heartfelt emails about her grandfather. These stories don’t just connect; they help your audience remember, rave about, and refer you.

Remember, you probably already have great content—social posts, newsletters, podcast interviews—that you can repurpose into your welcome sequence. Marisa reminded me (and I want to remind you): you don’t have to start from scratch. You probably have everything you need already written—just waiting to be reused and recycled into your welcome sequence.

If you want more of Marisa’s genius insights, you can check out the Copy Confident Society. I personally vouch for how supportive and valuable her program is. People rave about the support they get, feeling genuinely empowered to write compelling, engaging copy.
